Fencing Instructors

Oxford has high-level fencing instructors who have trained in New York, Europe, and at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center — over 30 years of fencing experience!

 

Doc Matthews

Senior coach (University and OFC).

Doc coaches the Ole Miss club, teaches the Beginning and Advanced Fencing class at Turner Sports Center, and runs the Oxford Parks Commission fencing class. He fences up to 11 times a week! In addition, Doc travels extensively to fencing tournaments, and is one of the highest ranked senior fencers. Doc also attends the United States Fencing Association’s coaching college at the Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In his spare time, Doc teaches pharmacology at Ole Miss.

   

Walter Flaschka

Assistant coach (University and OFC).

Started fencing at age 11, under Yvonne Gallego in Tucson, AZ. A 4-year varsity starter at New York University under Steve Mormando, he also served terms as Team Captain and Foil squad captain, Leading NYU to several UAA and NCAA Championships. 1993 Cointe Cup winner. He has also represented the United States in international Junior and Cadet competitions. Studied under Edward Elterman at the New York Fencer's Club. Walter gives lessons in foil, epee and sabre.

In his spare time, Walter develops websites for his New York-based Internet company.

Vicki Reithel

Assistant coach (OFC)

Vicki began fencing five years ago, and runs our Jr Women's Foil class. More information coming soon.

   

Gregory Heyworth

Assistant coach (University and OFC).

A varsity member of the three-time NCAA champion Columbia fencing team, he also won the British University Championships while at Cambridge. He has represented the United States many times in international competitions as a member of the Junior World and Pan-American squads.

In his spare time, Gregory teaches English at the University.
