12-03-2002: We had an awesome parade!! (Pictures)
We were in the Oxford Christmas parade! It was very exciting, waving to thousands of people lining the streets. We had 14 fencers in uniform, throwing candy from the back of a decorated 16-foot trailer. We threw the candy too fast, and we had exhausted our supply by the time we reached the Square! Thanks to everybody who made it a great night. Special thanks to Margarette — who originally suggested the parade!

11-29-2002: Oxford Christmas Parade! Fencers read!!
We fencers will be in the Oxford Christmas Parade on Monday, December 2nd 2002!

We plan to have a truck and a flat-bed trailer to stand on during the parade. We will wave, smile, and throw things into the crowds. There will be roughly 25 floats, as well as school bands &etc. If possible, wear something seasonal (like a santa hat or reindeer antlers or something). Wear your fencing gear, if you have any. We will also have jackets, masks, and weapons from the Ole Miss Fencing Club. Other than that, DRESS WARMLY!

11-21-2002: 2002 Ole Miss Women's Team!
We finally got our team photos! It's about time. Meet our Women's Team here. (Pictures.)

Also — congratulations to Doc Matthews and Kevin Bartley, for bringing home the 2nd and 3rd place Sabre medals from Vanderbilt!

11-19-2002: Parade!
Rumors abound! Might Oxford Fencers be in a parade? Stay tuned for more information!

11-15-2002: Vanderbilt Open
We're goin' up to Vandy... Vandy... Vandy... There's a large open tournament there. We are sending up Doc Matthews, and two fencers from our fledgling women's team! Good luck to Paula and Jenn!! We're proud of you!

Getting ready...
Doc (l), Kevin, Eric, Jenn (r).

Paula packs her
fencing stuff.

Jenn gets info from Doc.
Clay (b.g.) dances.

11-11-2002: Congratulations, Doc and Kevin B!
Doc and Kevin returned from The Murray State Open with 7 of 13 trophies, including first in Foil, first in Sabre, and Second in Epee! Murray State gives the best trophies ever... we're going to get pictures of them.

11-10-2002: Cool pictures from fencing.net!
Awesome uniform (picture). Frightening mask (small picture). Trust your fencing thrust (monster lunge picture). Victory happy dance (picture of Italy's Vezzali). Sabre fencers — don't do this (hangtime picture). (Image links open in new window.)

11-09-2002: Cool links!
Oxford fencer Vicki found this interesting article from HowStuffWorks.com: How Fencing Equipment Works. "In this edition of How Stuff Works, we will examine the protective equipment as well as the electric scoring equipment used in modern fencing." They even have some pictures of equipment! (Visit.)

Fencing.net has a new design. When this site first launched, it seemed too ambitious to last long... also we wanted that cool URL. Years later, it's going strong, and is now the premier source for fencing information online. Glossary, calendars, drills, bulletin boards, links, suppliers, FAQs — you name it, Fencing.net has it! (Visit.) They now have photo albums. (Pictures.) A recent drill talks about Zone Theory, ideas about how to fence based on where you are on the strip. (Read.)

FencingWear.com — full of t-shirts, mugs, back-packs, clocks and mousepads. We're not affiliated, and we haven't bought anything yet, but some of the designs are pretty cool. (Get your gear on.)

U.S. Fencing — the mothership for all fencers. Like your club armorer, it's not very pretty, but it's full of information. It would be bad not to link to them. (Visit.) Also known as USFencing.org.

Fencing camps! A fencer called us up, looking for information about how to get good — fast. At a fencing camp, you live, breathe, eat and sleep fencing. Drills and footwork in the mornings, bouting and lessons at night. The better camps also talk about psychology, tactics and strategy. Google has over 200 hits on "Fencing Camp 2002." (Google 2002.) 2002 is almost over, though. (Google 2003.)

11-08-2002: How to start a club
Doc sent in an email. The USFA's Director of Member Services, Dana Dumcum wants to make a CD-ROM about clubbing. "...One idea that has been requested is to create a CD ROM with forms, tips and guides that could be useful to new and existing clubs. If you would send me your club tips, suggestions, how start a club, etc., I will compile your helpful hints, and suggestions and make them a part of the CD ROM. The goal is to distribute this CD to all current USFA member clubs free of charge." Send suggestions to Dana.Dumcum@usfencing.org by 12/1/2002. The CD-ROM should be out by February 2003.

11-05-2002: The Gathering followup...
131730-R1-23A We have a new album... Album Number III, courtesy of Eric Aitalia. Also, since The Gathering was a division sectional, and Ole Miss placed well... so we modest Mississippi fencers are now leading the division in points(!!) trumping Arkansas and Louisiana! (Image right: Laura J. launches flying lunge against Kevin B.)

11-01-2002: The Gathering
The results are in!! (View results here.) Congrats to Doc Matthews and the Ole Miss Fencer's Club for an excellent, exciting two-day tournament! Congratulations also to Clay Fulks, who took home the Overall Trophy and the Highlander DVD based on his results in three weapons. [There were over 50 fencers! -ed.]

Thank you to everybody who helped make this a great tournament. We hope you had fun!

10-27-2002:

10-26-2002: The Gathering (register)
The premier Oxford Tournament, running on October 26-27. More information at the Ole Miss website. Print and complete the registration form. And remember: There can be only one.

10-15-2002: We are buying back equipment from old students! If you have equipment, and you're not fencing — it can still be useful to us! More information coming soon.

10-11-2002: Ole Miss fencing joins the Conference of Collegiate Fencing Club. This is the real world now... we are building squads to compete against such schools as Vanderbilt, Army, South Carolina, Florida. The nationals are scheduled for April 2003.

Presently, we can field a Men's Foil, Men's Sabre, and Women's Foil squad.

10-10-2002: This site launches. It's way overdue.

09-01-2002: Friend and club booster Margarette, with son Bobby, lit out for Florida. We miss you both! Keep in touch!!
