Old News From 2005

12-03-2005: Cool happenings!
Monday, December 5th — Christmas Parade!

We're in the Oxford Christmas Parade again, so if you're a fencer, show up prior to 6pm and get on the float! We are meeting at the parade staging area -- big parking lot on North Lamar (it's the parking lot with Panini's, the Baptist Healthplex, and the Antique Mall... it's across the street from Handy Andy's). Bring your fencing gear. We will have candy to throw off the float.

Friday, December 9th — Movie Night!
7pm at the Oxford Fencer's Club. Pop-corn, drinks, and a working heater! Come watch some fencing competitions projected on the wall. Scream with excitement, groan with despair, tear your hair with tension... as we figure out how to get the projector working. Then do it all again as you watch some world-class fencing!

December 26th-30th — Fencing Camp!
9-11am, Monday through Friday, build muscles, polish technique, and learn bouting tactics. We will use games, drills, and both foam and sport weapons in an intense regimen to bring your fencing to the next level. For beginners and intermediate fencers. Speak to an instructor or contact us directly.

Good-bye, 2005!
Thank you! We'd like to thank all our fencers for making the launch of the Oxford Fencers Club a huge success. We're young and small, but growing fast, and our members are the best people in the world.

12-02-2005: OFC Says bon voyage to fencer
Slightly belated news... prima foilist, division champ, and all-around nice guy, Alan Kuhnle departed for college this year. He is doing his first year in England, and then the next 3 years in to Florida to dry off. Alan began as a child fencer with coach Doc Matthews, and later demonstrated great patience with coach Walter Flaschka's lessons and experiments. We hope he visits soon, and kicks us around.

We're sorry this announcement is a little late, but we had to find these pictures first. You can thank us later.

T-shirt modeling shoot

Yes, he's our prettiest fencer.

08-20-2005: Our first tournament! The Grand Opening Open
The OFC's first tournament was a small-but-fun gathering on Saturday morning. We welcomed fencers from as far away as Memphis, who braved the heat and tested out our newly (and beautifully) lacquered floor.

Terry Harkey was on hand from the Division to say hi and give us a wonderful salle-warming gift — fleur-de-lis book-ends for our soon-to-be-prodigious in-house fencing video library. Thank you!

We'd like to give our special thanks to everybody who found the time to visit during one of the busiest days in Oxford (move-in day for the Fall semester). We thank you for your support!

Yes, we'll have pictures up soon!

08-18-2005: Club Address!
Here is a MapQuest link for the club: LINK. The club is at:

Oxford Fencer's Club
606 McLarty Road
Oxford MS, 38655

If you're on University Avenue, look for the McDonalds which is close to Highway 7. Immediately adjacent to that McDonalds is a small road, which is McLarty. The fencing club is the 2nd building down the street -- it's big and square, and has a sign out front!

08-04-2005: Oxford Fencer's Club Opens on Saturday!
On saturday, August 6th, the Oxford Fencer's Club will open its doors! Everybody is invited to visit at 1pm for a party!

The floor is done, the sign is made (but not hung yet), the ping-pong table is present. There are bathrooms and showers, an office, and many lovely strips. The big website update will happen over the weekend.

Keep your eye on this website for more information!

07-31-2005: Open-Date!
After about 7 months of renovations, the fencing salle is finally ready to start operations. Special appreciation goes to Doc, who never gave up hope, and all the college guys, who never stopped taking tools home from the building. (Where's the drill now?)

Aug 20 is The Oxford Fencer's Club "Grand Opening Open," and we're taking pre-registrations at askFRED. (Link to registration.)

05-14-2005: About Fencing
More information about Fencing is now available on this site! We have a short history of fencing, and some useful links for learning more! (About Fencing link.)

04-07-2005: We're back from the Crescent City Open!
Congrats to Kevin Bartley, who got his Sabre "C"! Excellent fencing! Fun was had by most.

Floorplan of the salle-in-process:

04-01-2005: We're off to the Crescent City Open!
Good luck to Doc, Garrett, Kevin, Ryan, Trey, Brooks, & Walter at the Crescent City! We're going to fence hard, party hard, and bring back indicting videotape. This is a big tournament, with every open weapon being an A competition. We're also going to see our long-lost compatriot, Joseph O. Luck to everybody!

03-07-2005: A little late with some news
Congrats to Ryan for earning his Sabre E!

Pictures for weeks #3 and 4 of the Oxford Fencer's Club are now online. (See the Salle.) We keep building. The work grows faster than we can keep up. There are ~2 weeks (just a few photos) still needing to be put online.

Oxford Fencing now has a bulletin board for tighter communication. (Here is the bulletin board.)

01-21-2005: The Oxford Fencer's Club
The doors are open, but there's no fencing yet. We're renovating the interior. For in-progress, up-to-date reportage, see the Salle Progress page. (Link.)
